“A podcast is the perfect venue for giving people a flavor of what White Coat Wisdom is about,” said the author, Stephen J. Busalacchi, a former Wisconsin Public Radio reporter. “The beauty of oral history is you get to hear exactly what somebody said and how they said it, just like in radio,” added Busalacchi, who produced the podcast series.
The first installment features Anderson Bauer, MD, a young physician at the Medical College of Wisconsin. When Busalacchi interviewed him for the book, Bauer was finishing his last year of medical school and describes what it’s like to be in the throes of medical school in the 21st Century. The Bauer segment is twelve minutes long, and covers the intensity of the training, the angst involved in doing sensitive exams and the affect on his personal life.
White Coat Wisdom, the hardcover book, will be released nationally on June 21—the 240th anniversary of North America’s first medical school graduating class. These University of Pennsylvania physicians were among the American pioneers who helped establish the medical profession we know today.
