October 17: Health Literacy event brings authors to support literacy

October is Health Literacy Month. To celebrate, Literacy Network will present a discussion of health literacy, along with relevant readings by two great area authors. On October 17, 6:00 pm. we will host a bookfair at Barnes and Noble West, 7433 Mineral Point Road in Madison. Participants are invited to learn more about the important issue of health literacy and how it affects all of us.

About the Authors

Steve Busalacchi is the author of White Coat Wisdom: Extraordinary Doctors Talk About What They Do, How They Got There and Why Medicine Is So Much More Than A Job. The book has garnered a great deal of critical acclaim in 2009, winning the Eric Hoffer award for best health-related book of the year. White Coat Wisdom has also been a finalist for the Montaigne Medal and the Indie Book Awards.

Dick Edwards is the author of Mom, Dad . . . Can We Talk?, a book resource guide for people who are concerned about their aging parents and their health concerns. The book contains personal stories and quotes from adult children that help personalize and humanize the final stage of the parent-child relationship, to help ensure the best possible outcome. Mr. Edwards has more than 35 years of experience working with older adults and their families. He was the administrator of a retirement home, and a researcher at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Paul Smith, Wisconsin's leading voice for health literacy, will also join us at the discussion. Dr. Smith is being honored this fall with the Sally Sunde Family Advocate Award for his role in organizing regional and statewide health literacy summits. Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at UW-Madison, and is a board member of Wisconsin Literacy.

Barnes and Noble will provide donate a percentage of sales through this program to Literacy Network.
